Much of the greatest music of all time encompasses the themes of love and friendship, but those works that are inspired by real lovers, spouses and friends have a special and poignant place in the repertoire.
Soprano Amelia Watkins, lauded for her “rich glowing lyric sound destined for the heights” will be joined by pianist Francine Kay, similarly praised for being “incomparably luxuriant in sound,” in a program that intersperses deeply affecting vocal music with the movements of Ravel’s evocative masterpiece for solo piano, Tombeau de Couperin, in which each movement is dedicated to a friend of his who perished in World War I.
