J.S. Bach's Goldberg Variations take us on a musical odyssey that begins with a simple theme and unfolds in myriad harmonic, melodic and rhythmic directions, capturing his breathtaking command of baroque forms and dances - the aria, canon, fugue, overture - and his revelatory expansion of these genres. Legend has it that he wrote this aria and its 30 variations for his pupil Johann Gottlieb Goldberg to play for an insomniac patron. The Russian violinist Dmitry Sitkovetsky began work on a string trio arrangement of these variations in 1984, inspired by Glenn Gould’s record-smashing 1981 recording of the keyboard original.
